My winter was dark. Death of two family cats. Fought like hell to stop feldspar/quartz mine from putting a tailings landfill within town city limits. Went up against a town council. One council member flipped through a magazine during the public hearing. Lost the fight. White dust from quartz mining is dangerous as coal dust. It is not pretty angel dust; it causes silicosis. But deals have been struck, the wagons pulled close. Voices silenced by the status quo.
Sometimes the voices of dead poets hit the exact nerve:
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Lost the fight? With the council? I cringe. Have you talked to Dan Barron? He lives in Spruce Pine I think and he's in charge of the AMY Regional Library. Maybe could help? I can't stand the thought of any destruction near your land; am hoping there is still a way to halt this. Contact the Mitchell Gazette; the editor, Mitzi, is a wonderful woman and I am sure she will want to help. Plus she is a longtime local in the area. I just don't want this to be a done deal. Argh! Also -- the Frost poem brought back some memories of teaching my kids and of my first discovery of Frost. thanks!
Kiesa, I know Mitzi and we have spoken of this. She was very ill with pneumonia and pleurisy from Dec-Feb so was unable to muster energy for the issue. She has been good about publishing things during this conflict. I have never met Mr Barron but I know well about him. Believe me, we researched and networked like mad during this thing and had a very passionate public hearing with 40 people begging this not to happen but they passed the zoning change anyway. Some slim chance of lodging a complaint to Supreme Court but having trouble finding a lawyer. Folks here don't have the money. Thanks for your concern...
